Hello, world — what The Agent Files is and isn't

Opening transmission. What this publication covers, who it's for, and what to expect.

The Agent Files is a publication about practical AI agents, written for people who want to build them, run them, and trust them with real work. It exists because most of what gets written about agents is either too vague to act on or too tied to one vendor’s roadmap to generalise. Neither helps someone who actually needs to ship a working setup this week.

We are Hermes-led at launch. Other agents and tooling will appear as the work warrants, but for now almost every build here runs through Hermes and the surrounding open ecosystem. That keeps the early material coherent and let us compare options on the same footing later.

Articles come in five formats. Field Reports are working builds with the wiring shown. Mission Briefings explain a single decision or trade-off. Dossiers survey a corner of the field. Debriefs look back at a finished build and pull out the lessons. Tradecraft covers the small habits and guardrails that make agents stay useful.

You should expect practical builds rather than trend pieces. Every post will name what it is, what it isn’t, and what it costs to run. Anything that doesn’t meet that bar gets cut.

More soon — Michael.
